Who We Are
Rooted in Place. Grounded in People. Built for Real Leadership.
Summit to Shore began with a simple belief: leadership is human work.
Leadership happens in conversations, moments of uncertainty, and in quiet decisions no one sees. It happens in the space between who you are now and who you’re becoming. It is not defined by position alone but through life challenges, failures and successes.
Mark Roach is the founder and principal advisor of Summit to Shore Human Centred Leadership Advisory.
Meet our founder
I built leadership expertise through a professional career path that began in clinical nursing, moved through case management and rehabilitation, and grew into executive leadership in group benefits and disability insurance, organizational health, psychological injury, mental health programming, and continuous improvement.
Leadership is shaped by place, by people, and by the landscapes that form us.
Lessons Learned
The ocean teaches patience and power. The shore teaches transition. The summit teaches perspective. Those experiences shaped how I listen, how I notice what is changing beneath the surface, and how I stay steady when people and systems are under pressure.
Together, the landscapes remind us that leadership is not a performance or confined to a classroom, but a practice shaped by real life. In environments that can be uncertain, demanding, and sometimes tumultuous, what matters most is leadership that is steady, lived, and real.
“Focused, approachable, and driven by results, Mark is driven to build strong relationships. His empathetic nature and ability to see people where they are, enable easy connection of people to the right solutions—with clarity and care.”
I grew up by the ocean on the Atlantic coast, built a family life in Ontario, and saw my children come of age on the Alberta plains and in the Canadian Rockies. Each place left its mark. Now, having returned to Nova Scotia, I feel rooted again where mountains and farmland meet the sea and the landscape offers both beauty and contrast.
The heart of Summit to Shore: human-centred advisory grounded in lived experience, attentive to the realities of leadership, committed to helping leaders create the conditions for people to do their best work.
Place, culture, and context
Living across Canada has shaped how I understand people, leadership, and belonging. Different places carry different cultures, histories, pressures, and ways of making meaning — and those differences matter.
That experience has taught me to pause, listen, and pay attention to context: the life experience, community, identity, work history, and pressures each person carries. Effective leadership is never one-size-fits-all. It requires noticing what is said, what is unsaid, who feels safe to contribute, and what conditions help people do their best work without leaving parts of themselves outside the door.

Identity, trust, and belonging
Being part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community has shaped how I understand trust, safety, assumptions, and belonging. The experience of coming out across different life contexts has deepened my awareness of what it takes to be seen clearly — and what people need in order to feel respected without having to explain or defend who they are.
That awareness shapes my leadership practice in practical ways: using language with care, making fewer assumptions, noticing when someone may be managing how much of themselves they can safely share, and creating spaces where difference is respected from the start.
Neurodivergence, pattern recognition, and leadership
Being neurodivergent has shaped how I notice patterns, read systems, and look beneath the surface before accepting the obvious answer. It strengthens my ability to connect details, sense friction, ask direct questions, and make room for different ways of thinking, processing, contributing, and leading.
What we believe
Leadership is relational.
Strategy matters — but people carry the strategy. We start with the human experience, not the org chart, and pay attention to the context, culture, and relationships that shape how people show up.
Clarity is an act of care.
Leaders make better decisions when the noise quiets. Clear language, honest reflection, and thoughtful questions create the conditions for trust, safety, and action.
Place shapes practice.
Our Atlantic identity isn’t aesthetic. It’s philosophy: depth, presence, humility, resilience, and the long view.
Difference is a source of strength.
People do not all think, process, lead, or contribute in the same way. Strong leadership makes room for different identities, backgrounds, experiences, and ways of making meaning.
Growth is ongoing.
Leaders aren’t transformed in a weekend. They are becoming — steadily, imperfectly, honestly — through reflection, practice, feedback, and relationship.
